Oil Painting by Franz Martin Kuen - The Banquet of Cleopatra, 1771
Oil Painting by Franz Martin Kuen - The Banquet of Cleopatra, 1771. Oil on canvas. Signed at the bottom left "Kuen pinx. 1771" Cleopatra sits on the right side at a richly laid table. Mark Antony is sitting at the left side of the table, watching her, while she takes a glass of wine form a servant, about to drop the famous pearl into the wine to drink it. They are surrounded by several servants and other guests and sit in an antique looking setting. This work was painted by Franz Martin Kuen (1719-1771 Weissenhorn) shortly before his death in 1771. It is painted after the known fresco by Tiepolo at the Palazzo Labia in Venice. Kuen became familiar with Tiepolo during his study visit in Venice between 1745 and 1747. He was strongly influenced by this artist. The oil painting is fashioned after a sketching of the fresco he made during his time in Venice. The sketching can be seen at the Kuen-Estate at the local history museum of his hometown Weissenhorn, Germany. HxW: 26.4 x 30.3 inches.
