Wilhelm August Rieder, Cupid Making His Bow, dated 1818
Large painting of “Cupid Making His Bow” after Parmigianino (inscribed Correggio on the reverse) by Wilhelm August Rieder (1796 Oberdöbling - 1880 Vienna). Cupid is depicted as a naked young boy carving his bow. He stands with his back to the viewer, supports himself with one leg on books and looks over his shoulder directly at the viewer. Between his legs one can see bickering cupids. The painting is based on the famous model by Parmigianino (Cupido che fabbrica l'arco, 1533-1535) in almost the same size. He copied old masters for the Belvedere Gallery in Vienna, among others. Inscribed on the reverse "W. Rieder after Correggio 1818". In oil on canvas in a classicistic gold stucco frame.
